Ras Al Khaimah is home to the towering Jebel Jais mountain peak that bravely rises almost two kilometres above the Arabian Gulf. The hairpin road gloriously meanders through ruddy barren landscapes, deep chasms and rugged bluffs.

Various designated mountain trails are suited to walkers of all experience levels. Six trails have a cumulative distance of 16km, each with its own challenges through the diverse mountain ecosystem. The hiking trails are throughout the upper and lower segments of the mountains.

VIA FERRATA

Via Ferrata is the first 'iron path' in the Middle East. The 1km hiking trail at the base of the mountains traverse an adrenaline-filled hike, scramble and climb up steps, ladders and gravity-defying zip wires. This mild Via Ferrata allows non-expert climbers to reach over 120 metres safely. The course is opening soon.

• Although climbing experience is not necessary, you will need to have a mountain goat head-for-heights, reasonable fitness and comfortable hiking shoes.

• As with any hiking expedition, it's essential to stay safe and be vigilant at all times. Therefore, we have compiled a planning list for you.

• You'll find the lower trail map in here, and the upper trail map here. Remember that you should choose a route that is suitable for the lowest ability level in your group.

• Check the weather conditions and weather reports. The Hajar Mountains tend to be cooler than the rest of Ras Al Khaimah and can have unique weather systems, particularly during winter.

• For safety reasons, always hike with a companion. Not only do they provide you with some company; if an accident or emergency should arise, your buddy can raise the emergency alarm or seek assistance.

• Always let someone know where you are going and your estimated time of return. Then, if you do not arrive on time, they can alert the appropriate authorities.

• All of the routes in the mountains are carefully marked. It is advisable to carry a map to track your progress and know your precise location throughout the hike.

• Always take refreshments. Any form of activity can cause you to dehydrate, and lower your natural stamina. So it's essential to drink plenty of water and pack some energy-boosting snacks.

• Mountain trails are uneven; you, therefore, need to wear the appropriate footwear that fits and offer substantial grip. Hiking boots are best. Do not walk in flip-flops or sandals. It's also advisable to layer clothing so that you can maintain a comfortable temperature.

• Always carry a first aid kit and know how to use it.

• Only bring essential lightweight items so that you do not unnecessarily weigh yourself down.

• Understand your abilities and do not push those in your group. Take regular breaks and only walk as far as you are collectively able.

• Make a note of emergency contact numbers.

Should the group of hikers extend 10 people, you are obliged to inform the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Department ahead of your hike via email info@raktda.com, sharing detailed information related to the route, participants and timings.
