Jebel Jais Staycation: Where to play, stay, and dine at Jebel Jais

One of the most iconic natural landmarks in the UAE, Jebel Jais has been a favourite among residents and tourists alike for years now. Located in the Hajar mountain range in Ras Al Khaimah, the mountain peak is also the highest point in the UAE at 1,934 metres above sea level.

Given the cooler climes, panoramic views and plethora of world-class activities and amenities, it’s no wonder that Jebel Jais staycations are on everyone’s list. Come long weekends, summer getaways or special occasions, the summit is always clamouring with enthusiastic visitors.

Fun fact, scientists believe that the Hajar mountains were formed by a continental collision near the Arabian–Eurasian convergent plate boundary more than 70 million years ago. The highest mountain range in the region also shares borders with Oman, where it’s better known as Jabal Bil Ays.

A big part of Jebel Jais’ appeal for staycations lies in the convenience and versatility of it all.  From thrill-seekers and nature lovers, to history and geology enthusiasts or even gourmands, there’s something for everyone..

At the foot of the mountains, you’ll find some of the most gorgeous wadis (valleys). Accessible with 4x4 vehicles, they’re serene, gorgeous, full of amazing biodiversity and also make for good camping spots.

So if you’re planning your next staycation, it needs to be at Jebel Jais and here’s all you need to know!

All the activities to do at Jebel Jais

Hiking trails

Hiking trails

Hiking is one of the most common activities on the mountain, with a complex network of trails that make up varying routes. Great for trekkers of all levels, the paths often pass through old settlements and hidden oases.

In recent years, the authorities have worked towards developing many of the wilder trails. One of the more notable ones is the Hidden Oasis, which you can experience through a guided hike with the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp.

It’s not too bad for the everyday leisure hiker, with railings and trail construction to help with safety and navigation. Explore the versatile flora and fauna along the paths, as well as tribes living in communities that still preserve the traditional ways.

For those hiking without a guide, prior research is a must. You can also refer to the marked trails on the VJJ website (with more to come). A particularly noteworthy one is the Highlander Trail, considered one of the most challenging trails in the UAE. Boasting steep elevation gains from 150 metres to 1,800 metres above sea level, the views here will leave you spellbound.

Adventure sports

Adrenaline seekers will find a treasure trove of activities at Jebel Jais. From the world’s longest zipline (Jais Flight) to the Jais Sky Tour, Jais Sledder, and of course, the Jais Via Ferrata - there’s an adventure of every kind at the summit.

For a little extra immersive vibe, you can always sign up for the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp. With experts at the helm, learn essential life skills and techniques needed to survive life in the mountains. You could also check out activities at the highest camp in the UAE, Camp 1770. From sunset hikes in the infamous Summit Series to yoga under the stars, there’s a little bit of a challenge and a lot of beauty to be found here.

Cycling

Cycling-routes

Jebel Jais is great for cycling, given the challenging climb and smooth roads. Hosting the UAE Tour, a prestigious cycling race on the UCI World Tour, the mountain brings in world-class cyclists from all over. Known for its steep gradient and long distance, the climb to the summit is considered the queen stage of the race. With 28km of well-paved roads from the foot to the top of the mountain, it’s easy to see why.

However, there are also less demanding paths that can be considered. Add to that the backdrop of fantastic views, and it’s the ultimate fun activity.
